Various Crochet Stitches

Turning Chains:

When working rows, it is necessary to add extra chain stitches at the beginning of each row as a 'fake' stitch. These extra stitches are called turning chains and count as the first stitch of the row (unless otherwise stated). To compensate for this extra stitch, skip the first stitch of the row and work the first actual pattern stitch into the second stitch of the previous row. At the end of each row the last stich is worked into the turning chain of the previuos row.
Turning chains make a clean, strong edge to the work.

Slip Stitch

Slip Stitch (ss):

Make chain the required length.
1st row - Skip the first two chains. * Insert hook in the next chain, yarn over hook, draw through both loops. This is one slip stitch. Repeat from * to end of chain. Turn.
2nd row - Chain 2, skip the first slip stitch. * Insert hook through next slip stitch (going through both loops, see
variations), yarn over hook, draw through both loops, repeat from * into every single stitch, working last slip stitch on each row into the turning chain of previous row. Turn.
Repeat 2nd row until the article is the desired length. End off.

Single crochet (sc):

Make chain the required length.
1st row - Skip the first two chains. * Insert hook in the next chain, yarn over hook, draw through loop (there will be 2 loops on the hook), yarn over hook and draw through both loops (there will now be one loop left on the hook). This makes one single crochet. Repeat from * to end of chain. This is the first single crochet row. Turn.
2nd row - Chain 2, skip first single crochet. * Insert hook through next crochet (picking up both loops, see
variations), yarn over hook, draw loop through (2 loops on hook), yarn over hook, draw through both loops (1 loop on hook), repeat from * in every single crochet stitch, working last single crochet into turning chain on previous row. Turn.
Repeat 2nd row until the work measures the required length. End off.

Double Crochet

Double Crochet

Make chain the required length.
1st row - Skip first 3 chains, * yarn over hook, insert hook into next chain, yarn over, draw through 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook and draw through 2 loops (2 loops left on hook), yarn over hook and draw through last 2 loops (1 loop left on hook). This makes one double crochet. Repeat from * to end of chain. Turn.
2nd row - Ch2, skip first double crochet * 1 double into next double, repeat from * to end of row, working last double into second chain of turning chain. Turn.
Repeat 2nd row until work is required length.

Using the instructions with the diagrams above, there should be little difficulty in figuring out the following stitches:
